Which Super Saiyan Transformation Every Character Can Do

What’s the most powerful Super Saiyans transformation achieved by each of the characters in Dragon Ball canon? The characters in Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super have reached various degrees of power, with some being able to access higher levels of the Super Saiyan form than others.

The Super Saiyan transformation made its first appearance when the death of Krillin at the hands of Frieza unlocked Goku’s full power. After going Super Saiyan for the first time, Goku overpowered and defeated Frieza. Since then, other Saiyans in the world of Dragon Ball have attempted to both match and surpass this power, and many have been successful. Over the years, several different Super Saiyan forms have been discovered by Goku and the Z-Warriors. Every transformation has its own distinctive look.

Some Saiyans, however, weren’t around long enough to ever even hit the first Super Saiyan form. Bardock, Raditz, and Nappa are among those characters. The situation is different, though, for the Z-Warriors. As Dragon Ball is a franchise where more formidable villains emerge in every saga, the heroes are always getting progressively stronger, paving the way for new Super Saiyan transformations. Here’s the highest form of Super Saiyan that each character has been able to reach in the anime.

Goku: Super Saiyan Blue

The highest level of power Goku has access to is of course his completed Ultra Instinct form, but that’s not an extension of the Super Saiyan transformation by any means. Goku’s current limit in that regard is Super Saiyan Blue, which he’s been able to use since the Golden Frieza Saga. He can further amplify that power with the Kaio-ken technique.

Vegeta: Super Saiyan Blue Evolved

There’s at least one area where Vegeta isn’t one step behind Goku, and that’s his mastery of Super Saiyan Blue. Vegeta became the first character to unlock the Super Saiyan Blue Evolved form in the Tournament of Power. This happened as a result of Vegeta’s frustration with Goku going Ultra Instinct. Opting not to copy his rival, Vegeta wanted to improve his strength in his own way. That’s how Super Saiyan Blue Evolved – a heightened version of the Blue form – was born.

Gohan: Super Saiyan 2

Gohan became the first Dragon Ball character to go Super Saiyan 2 during the Cell Saga, but later slacked off on his training so much that he was never able to hit the third level. That being said, he no longer needs to. Like Goku, Gohan has gone beyond the limits of a Super Saiyan. His max power doesn’t rely on his Saiyan heritage. As Ultimate Gohan, he doesn’t go Super Saiyan at all. Unfortunately, he lost his Ultimate upgrade sometime after the fight with Buu, and wasn’t able to obtain it again until he was pushed by Piccolo during their training for the Tournament of Power. Gohan claims that he’s done with the Super Saiyan transformation because he’s chosen a different path for himself.

Goten & Trunks: Super Saiyan

Before reaching the age of ten, Goten and Trunks were already strong enough to go Super Saiyan. As impressive as that is, they haven’t been able to get any further. But in their fused form of Gotenks, their combined strength lets them go Super Saiyan 3. This was an astonishing feat at first, but at this point, it’s not even as strong as Goku’s base form anymore, as indicated by the fight with the Vegeta clone in Dragon Ball Super.

Goku Black: Super Saiyan Rosé

One of the two main villains of the Future Trunks Saga, Goku Black acquired his own take on the Super Saiyan form after fighting with Goku. Thanks to their battle, he figured out how to go Super Saiyan Rosé, which can be recognized by the user’s pink-tinted hair. In this form, Goku Black’s power is on par with Super Saiyan Blue Goku. This ability is unique to Goku Black because he’s actually a Kai inhabiting a Saiyan’s stolen body.

Future Trunks: Super Saiyan Rage

Fueled by his anger, Future Trunks shattered his limits in the fight against Goku Black and Zamasu to go from Super Saiyan 2 to Super Saiyan Rage. This form is similar in appearance to Super Saiyan 2, with the biggest difference being that Trunks’ pupils disappear.  Considering that this level allowed him to defeat Fused Zamasu, it’s clear that it’s the most powerful variation of the Super Saiyan form that doesn’t draw upon divine energy.

Cabba: Super Saiyan 2

Cabba went through numerous struggles in the Tournament of Power. Egged on by Vegeta and motivated by his determination to lead his Universe 6 team to victory, Cabba went Super Saiyan 2 to get a come-from-behind win over Universe 4’s Monna.

Caulifla: Super Saiyan 2

Anger is traditionally the trigger for a character’s first use of the Super Saiyan form, but Caulifla learned a different technique for that from Cabba. After channeling her energy into her back, Caulifla transformed. She was momentarily able to go Super Saiyan 2 as well. After sparring with Goku in the Tournament of Power, she developed a better understanding of her abilities and can now access it at will. Caulifla’s next goal is to reach Super Saiyan 3.

Broly: Legendary Super Saiyan

Broly is without a doubt the most powerful Saiyan ever encountered in the Dragon Ball franchise. Without transforming at all, he can force Goku and Vegeta to team-up and use their Blue forms. The anger he felt after watching his father die made him become a seemingly unstoppable force. It took the fusion of Goku and Vegeta, “Gogeta”, to put up a fight against him. After becoming a Legendary Super Saiyan, only Blue Gogeta had the capabilities to defeat him.

Kale: True Legendary Super Saiyan

Caulilfla’s best friend, Kale, startled Vegeta in the Tournament of Power when she went into her berserk state. Vegeta was able to recognize this as the Legendary Super Saiyan form that he had heard about as a child. Similar to Broly, Kale fights with a murderous fury and is void of any sense of reason while using this power. What separates Kale from Broly is that during her team-up with Caulifla against Goku, she entered an improved version of this state – referred to by some fans as “True Legendary Super Saiyan” – which made it possible for her to keep all the power that came with it while simultaneously remaining in full control of her actions.
